Thickness of Concrete


The minimum thickness requirement for a residential concrete slab is 4 inches. This meet the requirements of building codes, support lightweight vehicles and withstand normal wear and tear. Concrete slabs poured for barns or buildings that will store heavier duty vehicles / equipment should be 5 to 6 inches thick. If the concrete slab for a barn or building storing heavy duty vehicles such as farm equipment, RV's, dump trucks, etc. is not reinforced and at least 5 inches thick the slab will crack due to the weight.

    If the concrete slab is not level water runoff can puddle against the foundation causing more issues long term. Also an uneven slab can look bad and not be as structuraly sound.

  • Is the concrete slab durable enough for its purpose?

    The minimum thickness requirement for a residential concrete slab is 4 inches. This meet the requirements of building codes, support lightweight vehicles and withstand normal wear and tear.

  • Does the concrete slab drain water runoff properly?

    If the water runoff is directed towards foundation a homeonwer can find themselves with water in thier basement or crawlspace. 


    If the water runoff is puddling in the garden it can be ruined and sitting water can attract mosquitos making sitting out on the patio less enjoyable. 

  • Is the concrete slab sub-base thick enough?

    If your concrete slab is for a patio, sidewalk, or shed you should have at least 3 to 4 inches of sub-base material. If the concrete slab is for a driveway, garage, etc. there should be 4+ inches thick.



  • What type of base should be used for concrete slab

    Yes, If the sub-base material of a concrete slab is not compacted you risk it settling over tme which leaves voids and the slab potentially sloping / cracking.
